An early version of Buk, while we're still building it. It is not finished. Things will break, look wrong, or change between one week and the next. The known issues page lists what we already know about; everything else is worth telling us about, which is the main reason you’re here.

Buk is free to start, and a free account is a real one: you can gather recipes, build a whole book and look at every page of it. Exported pages carry a small “Made with Buk.recipes” mark until you pay to remove it. The paid plans are below, and they are optional.

You keep every right to what you put in. We claim no ownership of your recipes, your photographs or the books you make, and we don’t use them to train anything.

What you give us is narrow permission to run the service for you: to store your content, render it into pages and PDFs, send it to our AI provider to be tidied or transcribed when you ask, and show it to anyone you deliberately share a link with. That’s the whole license, and it ends when you delete the content.

Two things. The Book Project pack is one payment that unlocks everything for 90 days, sized for finishing one book. Pro is a subscription, monthly or yearly, for people who keep cooking from what they’ve made. Prices are in US dollars and are shown before you pay. Sales tax, where it applies, is added and shown at checkout before you confirm.

Purchases are handled by Paddle, who is the merchant of record. Paddle sells you the access, takes the payment, handles any sales tax or VAT, and sends the receipt. We never see your card details. Paddle’s own buyer terms cover that transaction; this page covers your use of Buk.

Prices can change. A change never reaches something you’ve already bought, and if one would affect a subscription you hold, you’ll hear from us by email before the renewal it applies to.

Pro renews automatically at the end of each period — every month or every year, whichever you picked — at the price you signed up at, unless we’ve written to you about a change first.

You can cancel any time from your account page. Manage plan opens Paddle’s portal, which is also where you change the card. Canceling stops the next charge and nothing else: Pro keeps working until the end of the period you have already paid for, and the account goes back to the plan you were on before it. Nothing is deleted when that happens.

It is not a subscription. Nothing renews and there is nothing to cancel. It unlocks the paid features for 90 days from the day you buy it, and buying a second one while the first is still running adds to the window rather than replacing it.

When the window closes, what you made is still yours: your recipes, your books, the share links you have already made, and every PDF you have already saved. What stops is new work — minting new share links, adding recipes past the free limit, the AI-voice styles, fresh AI edits, and new watermark-free exports all need an active pack or Pro.

Buk is software you use in a browser. Nothing ships to you and there is nothing to install. Paid features unlock on your account as soon as Paddle confirms the payment, which normally takes seconds. If it hasn’t happened 10 minutes later, email us and we’ll put it right by hand.

What you make is a print-ready PDF you download — interior and cover, sized for a real printer. The one thing that costs money beyond this is printing a physical book, and you don’t pay us for it: you take the files to a printer, who charges you directly. We don’t see your payment details and we aren’t party to that order, which also means the printer, not us, is who a delivery or a damaged parcel has to go to.

30 days on the Book Project pack, and 14 days on any Pro charge, including a renewal that caught you by surprise. Paddle sends the money back to the card you paid with. The full policy, and how to ask, is on the refunds page, which is part of these terms.

We won’t wipe your beta data. When the beta ends your account and everything in it carries over — no reset, no "thanks for testing, start again". These are family recipes; treating them as disposable test data would be the one unforgivable thing.

We back up nightly. Keep your originals anyway. The database goes to encrypted storage every night and photographs are versioned, so a bad day on our end is recoverable. That is insurance, not a promise that nothing can ever go wrong — let Buk sit alongside your cards and photos rather than replace them. Details in the privacy notice.

Buk uses AI to read handwriting, tidy imported recipes and rewrite prose in a chosen voice. It is good, and it is not perfect. It can misread a quantity, drop a step, or lose a note in the margin.

Read the page against your original before you cook from it or print a stack of them — particularly quantities, oven temperatures and anything to do with allergies. We never rewrite ingredient amounts on purpose, but we can’t promise a transcription is right, and a cookbook is something people cook from.

• Upload recipes that are yours, your family’s, or that you may lawfully copy — not a scanned commercial cookbook.
• Nothing illegal, and nothing that isn’t yours to share.
• Don’t attack the service or try to run somebody else’s bulk workload through it.

When you import a recipe from a web page, or upload a photograph or a scan, you're telling us you have the right to keep a copy of it for your own use.

The ingredients and steps of a recipe are mostly facts. The photographs and the writing around them belong to whoever made them, and a page you import may carry both.

If someone tells us that something in your account is theirs and shouldn't be there, we may remove it. We'll tell you what we removed and why, and you can tell us if you think we got it wrong.

If we have to remove other people's work from the same account more than once, we may close it. Repeated complaints that turn out to be valid will.

No uptime guarantee. The beta runs on one small server and may be down for a deploy, a mistake, or a Tuesday. Features may change or disappear. Buk is provided as it is, without warranties.

Where the law allows us to limit what we owe you, our liability is limited to the greater of $50 or what you paid for Buk, through Paddle, in the 12 months before the problem. Some rights can’t be signed away, and those stand whatever this page says.

You can stop whenever you like, and ask us to delete everything at [email protected]. We can end the beta or close an account that’s breaking the rules above — if we close the beta itself, you’ll get notice and a chance to export your books first. If we end paid access for any reason other than you breaking those rules, we refund the unused part, in proportion to the days left on it.

While your account is open we keep your recipes, your photographs and your books for as long as you want them there. We don’t thin them out, we don’t expire the ones you haven’t opened, and dropping back to the free plan doesn’t remove anything you already made.

When you ask us to delete your account we erase it, and from that moment nothing of yours is served to anyone. For ninety days afterwards our nightly backups still hold a copy, and so does the second region we keep them in, in case the first one is ever lost. After ninety days both are gone and nobody can bring them back, including us.

We won’t go into those backups to look at your data once you’ve asked us to delete it. The one exception is you: if you change your mind inside the ninety days, write to us and we’ll put your account back.

Copies of your pages that exist only to make Buk fast are deleted within two weeks, whatever else is happening. What we do with your email address, and the rest of the personal information side of this, is in the Privacy policy.

Buk is built and run by Bryan Ashby, working as an individual rather than a company. One person, named, so you know who you’re writing to.

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Utah, United States.

If these terms change in a way that matters, everyone with an account gets an email, and the date at the top changes with it. A change never applies backward to something you’ve already bought. The refund policy keeps its own date and its own history for the same reason.
